University of Languages and International Studies (ULIS), part of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, trains English-language learners across a range of professional and academic programmes. ULIS partnered with ELSA on a blended English programme for air traffic control trainees, combining classroom instruction with ELSA-powered self-practice — helping learners move from supported classroom exercises to confident, independent English performance on the job.

For air traffic control professionals, English needs to be practised repeatedly and accurately because communication is closely connected to real operational situations… This makes the 60/40 blended model much more practical than relying on classroom instruction alone.

The Challenge

Air traffic controllers must be able to communicate effectively in English on the job. Classroom instruction alone left limited room for the repeated, pressure-tested speaking practice controllers needed. ULIS needed a way to extend spoken English practice beyond class time without adding to instructors' workload.

The Solution

ULIS built a blended 60/40 programme: 60% classroom instruction from ULIS teaching staff, 40% self-directed practice on ELSA. Learners completed assigned speaking activities, pronunciation feedback, and independent scenario practice outside class — extending structured learning into continuous, real-world English practice for air traffic control communication.

The Results

Across the reporting period, learners also completed an average 83.8% of assigned exercises, and average EPS scores rose from 60.6 to 70.0 — evidence that the blended model built consistent daily practice habits alongside measurable skill gains.
